latest Purchases of epic awesomeness

I've been on another bit of a HardBack purchasing spree recently with spectacular results.

China Meville's new work, Kraken, is a stunning return to form from him after at least 2 weak books. The setting is modern day London, uses the Kind Rat style of London Existence, with a very funny, sharp, adn well designed plot. at least 4.5/5 if nto a solid 5.

While i'm only half way through David Mitchell's "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet" you can tell it's another classic from one of the best story writers of his generation. Its easily standing up there with Ghostwritten and Cloud Atlas. Expect this book to win prizes this year. Set in a small merchant port/island off Nagasaki at the tail end of the Dutch East India Company's reign there, the rich and detailed world credit's Mitchell highly.

As you recently complained i've been agreeing with you to much - So i'll say King Rat is one of the most awful books i've ever tried to read. The horrible use of constant L'don slang and the dance music referances as well as a lead character who had all the charisma of a breezeblock. If Danny Dyer wrote books.....

Have you read Dan Browne?

In that case, don't read any of the rest of his stuff you'll hate it. I've always found it hilarious, the number of people who are not into Jungle that slated the book for being on about music they don't like. The author himself admits he went a bit OTT on it, but at the time it fitted as he was "well into it" and i've seen much, much worse literary crimes committed.

Did you read Ghostwritten yet?

I brought The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons (because it was the prequel) when The Da Vinci Code became 'huge'. Yeah they aren't very good, but readable because they are so easy - I certainly wouldn't buy another one of his books, and I haven't rented the new one or his older books either. /Disclaimer - I actually brought that in an WHSmiths at Birmingham airport before going on holiday last year, when I realised i'd forgotten to take any books with me. WHsmiths only had about 20 chart books and most were celebrity autobiographys and as awful as that book was i'd imagine it'd be better than reading about Kerry Katona.

As for King Rat I couldn't finish it. I hated the style.

No I haven't read Ghostwritten yet, it's still in the shelf. I'm struggling though the latest Stephen King at the minute - it's a long bugger.

Drop it! Seriously - Ghostwritten is a magical book that you will forever thank me for recommending!

As for mr King. I though he stopped being good and went pulp-reformatted trash about 15 years ago? The only 2 books of his i've tried to read were shockingly bad.

ass for king rat, it's definitely a zodiac to neal steaphenson's snow crash, in comparison with perdido street station.

ps. Put down Thousand Nights for a day, finished V for Vendetta last night (Graphic Novel) , and am now half way through Brave New World.

Hmmm. Maybe i should get out more...

Oh yeah Stephen King hasn't written a great tale for about 20 years. He can still write something decent, but he also has the habit of producing some absolute drivel (Hi Lisey's Story!)

Yep - I got a confirmation email this morning saying it's definitely going ahead. need to have a few operations to correct some long standing medical issues, a few more Innoculations and sort my work permit, but it looks like End of September you'll be rid of me for a while

Just finished "Thousand Autumns..."

I feel for anyone who doesn't buy and read it. it's captivating, genius & incredible all at once.

picked up the New Iain Banks (no M) novel yesterday. it's apparently very close to sci-fi. weird.
